LOOKING BACK AT COMPLETED DESIGN WORK IN 2021
Despite trying times for the whole of the hospitality sector and the co-existing design industry - we have felt lucky to remain busy in the studio over the past year, doing what we are known and trusted for - creating world-class design locally that fuses interior architecture with branding.
From the elegant grandeur of the brand identity for the Thirty Six workplace in Edinburgh’s New Town to the poised drama of the full interior refurb for Matto Pizza, the latest ‘place to be seen’ in Morningside - our projects in 2021 have fully quenched our love for what we do.

Workplace design and new beginnings
We all felt the dramatic shift in ways of working during COVID19 and The Thirty Six were hot on the trail – ready to cater to the newly evolved needs of our workplaces in 2021 and beyond. We set out to transform this beautiful traditional Georgian terrace in the heart of Edinburgh's New Town, from an office building, to a premium workplace with all of the comforts and fine details you would expect from high-end hospitality – a space where people would dream to work. Harnessing the essence of the iconic location and grandeur of the building through a clever brand identity and fine craftsmanship applied in innovatively beautiful ways, allowed us to develop a blueprint for The Thirty Six that has kept the neighbours talking into 2022.

Speaking of workplaces, we kickstarted 2021 by saying hello to our new and loved Leith neighborhood as we set up screens in our studio at 39 Commercial Street. Huddled alongside other inspiring design studios - the stunning church conversion is just as marvelous as the ideas that come from it! Do pop in and visit us the next time you are strolling through Leith.
Craft beer… and more beer Vault City came to us with a fresh new concept for the craft beer scene in Edinburgh – The Wee Vault tasting room and bottle shop, boasting a plethora of their modern sour beers brewed in Portobello. As the name suggests, our challenge was in building interior architecture that would utilise the limited space, to home plenty of bottles of beer and just enough seats for its thirsty customers.
The result on the inside was a streamlined design, minimal colour scheme and natural materials that let the gorgeous vaulted ceiling and of course, the beer, do the talking. On the outside, it may be small but you won’t miss it! With a larger than life neon sign and brightly coloured graphic beer ‘splashes’ dancing across the window panes.
After almost two years, we were so happy to celebrate the return of festivals by teaming up with Vault City once again on the concept and build of their pop up bar - ready to hit the road for their tour of UK craft beer festivals. In line with Vault City’s existing brand, we kept the design simple, clean and bold.
City co-living Co-living is a concept on the rise and making its way to Edinburgh in 2023. The student accommodation and residential living spaces go beyond a block of flats with a lobby, and instead incorporate communal kitchens and living areas that are aesthetically appealing and require a designful approach. Partnered with developers, Studio So’s amalgamation of interior architecture with design and branding allowed us to think in unison from the birth of this project, which is currently at the stage of creative ideation and will continue on until the launch – watch this space!
Luxury hotels and exhibition spaces We revisited our existing client, Ness Walk to refurbish the permanent outdoor luxury bar in their Grade B listed, five star hotel that sits gracefully on the banks of the River Ness. We created an enchanting forest of contrasting textures using soft, natural textiles and stainless steel, set off by cool lighting. This month we were thrilled to hear that Ness walk won Urban Hotel Of The Year 2022 at Conde Nast Johansens Awards for Excellence. Find out more about our time working with Ness Walk here.
Local restaurants We had a tasty end to the year thanks to Matto Pizza in Morningside - a local independent restaurant with a big vision to bring authentic Neapolitan style pizza into 2022. This was a complete design and build project with all interior architecture and finishing touches fleshed out in the studio. To bring it all to life, we partnered with the incredible team at Lucid Black on construction. Check out the finished results here see the full transformation!
